Sustainable transport strategies.
Transport strategies that show how a site connects to shops, schools, jobs and public transport, and what it will do to make walking, wheeling, cycling and bus travel the easy choice.
Also known as: sustainable transport, sustainable transport strategy, transport strategy, accessibility strategy
What’s included.
NPPF policy TR3 directs development to sustainable locations, and TR4 asks schemes to give priority first to walking, wheeling and cycling, then to public transport. A clear sustainable transport strategy is often what turns a borderline location into an acceptable one.
- Audit of walking, cycling and bus access
- Distances and routes to everyday services
- Gaps and practical improvements
- Bus service and stop proposals
- Mobility hubs, car clubs and cycle hire where they fit
- A delivery and funding plan
Straightforward, proportionate, agreed early.
Honest about the location
We set out what the site has and what it lacks, then focus on improvements that make a real difference.
Deliverable
Measures that can be built on land you control or the highway, and funded through the scheme.
Good for neighbours too
The best improvements serve existing residents as well, which is often what wins support.
Questions we get asked
Can a rural site be made sustainable?
Sometimes. National policy recognises that opportunities vary between urban and rural areas. We look for realistic measures and tell you honestly how strong the case is.
What counts as a reasonable walking distance?
There is no single national figure. Councils often use guidance of around 800 m to 2 km depending on the trip. We use what the council uses.
Do you prepare strategies for allocations and local plan sites?
Yes, including site promotion evidence for local plan examinations.
