Highways objection on your application? What to do next.

Most objections can be answered. How to read the response and what a good reply looks like.

Ripple Development PlanningUpdated October 2026

A highways objection is common, and most can be answered. What matters is reading it carefully and replying with the right evidence, quickly.

Read what is actually being asked

Most objections fall into one of three types:

  • Missing information. A drawing, survey or calculation the officer needs to see.
  • A design point. Visibility, access width, parking or vehicle tracking.
  • An objection in principle. The officer thinks the effect on safety is unacceptable or the effect on the network is severe.

The first two are usually straightforward. The third needs evidence, and sometimes a change to the scheme.

Talk to the officer

A short call often makes clear what would resolve the concern. Officers generally prefer to see a problem fixed than an application refused.

Reply with a technical note

A focused note that takes each point in turn, with drawings where needed, works better than reissuing the whole report. Keep it short, plain and easy to agree with.

Watch the timetable

Applications run to a determination date. If you need time to answer properly, agree an extension of time with the case officer rather than letting the application be refused.

If it still goes wrong

If the objection stands and permission is refused, the evidence you prepare now becomes the basis of an appeal. Write it as if an inspector will read it. Our guide to what “severe” means explains the policy test.
