Access, visibility and swept path checks.
Check the access and layout work on transport grounds before you submit, so the highways officer does not have to ask.
Three steps, no wasted effort.
Send the layout
A red line and a sketch or draft layout is enough to start.
We check it
Visibility, access width, parking and vehicle tracking, against the council’s standards.
You get drawings
Clear visibility and swept path drawings, with any changes needed marked up.
- Visibility splays, based on measured speeds where it helps
- New driveways, vehicle crossovers and dropped kerbs
- Access width and junction layout
- Bin lorry, fire engine and delivery tracking
- Car and cycle parking numbers and layout
- Turning heads and private drives
- Footways and crossing points
Questions we get asked
Can a speed survey reduce the visibility we need?
Often, yes. If traffic is slower than the speed limit, recorded speeds can justify a shorter splay.
Do you work from our CAD layout?
Yes. Send the layout and we will produce drawings to match it.
Is this enough on its own for planning?
For some small schemes, a short note with these drawings is all the council needs. We will tell you if yours needs more.
What the checks cover
Three questions decide most access reviews: can drivers see and be seen, can the vehicles that need to get in turn round safely, and does the layout work for people walking and wheeling.
Visibility is set from the speed of traffic on the road, using Manual for Streets on most local roads and the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges on faster ones. Vehicle tracking shows how refuse lorries, fire engines and delivery vehicles move through the site.
- Visibility splays drawn from measured or posted speeds, with the land they cross checked against the highway boundary.
- Tracking for the largest vehicle that will use the site, agreed with the council where it has its own standard.
- Footway links, crossing points and gradients, so the access works for everyone.
