How schemes in Castle Donington get decided.
Two councils involved
North West Leicestershire District Council decides the planning application, but Leicestershire County Council is the highway authority and gives the highways response. We deal with both, so the evidence suits the county’s standards as well as the local plan.
What shapes schemes in Castle Donington
A village next to East Midlands Airport and M1 junction 24, with major logistics sites and Donington Park nearby. Lanes without footways, visibility at the access and how far it is to shops, schools and a bus stop are usually the deciding issues.
Roads, rail and buses
The main roads are the A50 and A453, at M1 junction 24. There’s no railway station, so bus services and safe walking and cycling routes carry more weight. Where a scheme adds traffic to the M1, A50 and A453, National Highways needs to agree the evidence as well. We tell you early if yours does.
Questions we get asked
Who is the highway authority in Castle Donington?
Leicestershire County Council, for local roads. North West Leicestershire District Council decides the planning application and consults Leicestershire County Council on highways matters. We deal with both. National Highways is responsible for the M1, A50 and A453.
Do you cover the area around Castle Donington?
Yes, including Shepshed, Loughborough and Derby, and the villages and rural sites in between.
Will National Highways need to be involved?
Only if a scheme adds enough traffic to the M1, A50 and A453 to matter. We check that at the start and, where it’s needed, agree the approach with them alongside the council.
