Traffic and speed surveys.
Traffic, speed, junction and pedestrian surveys, scoped to what the council needs and delivered with trusted survey partners.
Also known as: traffic survey, speed survey, ATC survey, radar speed survey, junction turning count, pedestrian count, queue length survey
What’s included.
Surveys underpin visibility splays, junction models and Transport Assessments. Choosing the right survey, location and dates matters as much as the counts themselves. Neutral periods outside school holidays are usually expected.
- Automatic traffic counts (ATC)
- Radar and ATC speed surveys
- Junction turning counts
- Queue length surveys
- Pedestrian and cycle counts
- Parking beat and stress surveys
Straightforward, proportionate, agreed early.
Only what is needed
We tell you which surveys the council will actually ask for, and which it will not.
Right dates
Neutral weekdays outside school holidays, booked early so they do not hold up the programme.
Trusted partners
Delivered with established survey companies, checked before they reach the report.
Questions we get asked
Can a speed survey reduce the visibility I need?
Often, yes, where recorded speeds are below the speed limit.
When can surveys be done?
Usually on neutral weekdays outside school holidays. August and the run-up to Christmas are normally avoided.
How long does a traffic survey run?
Automatic counts often run for seven days. Turning counts usually cover the morning and evening peaks.
Often needed alongside.
Getting data that will be accepted
Speed and traffic surveys are only useful if they are carried out at the right place and time. Officers will challenge data taken in school holidays, during roadworks or too far from the access.
- Automatic traffic counters, usually for a full week, for speeds and flows.
- Turning counts and queue surveys at junctions that need modelling.
- Speeds recorded where they matter: at the proposed access, in both directions.
- Survey dates checked against school terms, roadworks and events.
